When the snow starts falling and the world slows down, there’s something magical about packing up the car, bundling the kids in their snowsuits, and heading off on a cozy winter getaway. Whether you’re looking to embrace the chill with snowy adventures or warm up by the fire with hot cocoa and board games, the Midwest has plenty of destinations that make winter feel like something to celebrate — not escape.
Here are six of my favorite family-friendly winter getaways that are close enough for a long weekend, but far enough to feel like a true escape.
1. Door County, Wisconsin
Think Door County is just for summer? Think again. In winter, the crowds disappear and the peninsula turns into a snow-dusted wonderland. Go ice skating in Sister Bay, snowshoe through Peninsula State Park, or cozy up at a local inn with a fireplace. Many wineries and distilleries stay open through the colder months, making it perfect for parents who want to unwind after a day of snowy fun. If you happen to go in December, make sure to check out all of their amazing holiday markets each weekend.
Where to stay: The Landmark Resort in Egg Harbor or the White Gull Inn for a true Wisconsin feel. Don’t miss: A fish boil and a cherry pie from Wilson’s Ice Cream Parlor (yes, even in winter!).
2. The North Shore, Minnesota
If you love the mix of adventure and scenery, head north toward Lake Superior. The frozen waterfalls at Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse are stunning this time of year. Lutsen Mountains offers great skiing, while nearby cozy cabins make for the perfect base to relax and recharge.
Where to stay: Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts — beautiful views, indoor pool, and plenty of space for kids. Don’t miss: An evening bonfire on the beach with s’mores under the stars.
3. Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin
When it’s too cold to play outside, head indoors to “The Waterpark Capital of the World.” The Dells is a great winter destination for families looking for fun without freezing. With huge indoor waterparks, arcades, and family-friendly restaurants, it’s a guaranteed hit with little ones (and parents who need a break). Make sure to check out their Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales to get the best deal this season.
Where to stay: Great Wolf Lodge for the younger crew or Kalahari Resort for endless indoor fun. Don’t miss: The lazy rivers and themed kid’s rooms — pure magic for young travelers.
4. Galena, Illinois
This charming little town feels like stepping into a Hallmark movie come winter. The historic streets twinkle with lights, local shops welcome you with hot cider, and nearby Chestnut Mountain Resort offers skiing and snowboarding for all levels. It’s small-town charm at its coziest.
Where to stay: Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa — family-friendly with winter activities and a relaxing vibe. Don’t miss: Galena’s holiday events in December — they go all out!
5. Bayfield, Wisconsin
Perched on the edge of Lake Superior, Bayfield is peaceful and picturesque in the winter. Take a scenic drive, explore the Apostle Islands Ice Caves (if the lake freezes enough), or just snuggle up in a lakeside cabin. This is the perfect spot for families who love nature and want a quiet escape.
Where to stay: The Bayfield Inn or a cozy cabin rental along the lake. Don’t miss: Stargazing on a clear night — with almost no light pollution, it’s breathtaking. You may even catch the Northern Lights.
6. Branson, Missouri
For families who want a mix of holiday magic, entertainment, and outdoor beauty, Branson shines in winter. The town transforms into a festive wonderland filled with lights, music, and holiday spirit. Kids will love hopping aboard the Polar Express Train Ride — complete with hot cocoa and Santa — while parents can enjoy the nostalgic fun of Dolly Parton’s Stampede Christmas Show. When you’re ready for some fresh air, head out to Table Rock Lake for scenic winter views or a peaceful hike along the shoreline. It’s a perfect balance of cozy and fun!
Where to stay: Still Waters Resort — close to Table Rock and full of family-friendly amenities.Don’t miss: Silver Dollar City’s An Old Time Christmas — over 6.5 million lights make it one of the most dazzling holiday displays in the country.
Winter doesn’t have to mean hibernation. Whether you crave adventure or just a cozy escape, the Midwest is full of magical places to explore when the snow flies. Pack your boots, your sense of wonder, and maybe an extra blanket — these getaways are proof that some of the best family memories are made when the world outside is covered in snow.
