I finally crossed something big off my fall bucket list — a Halloween-season trip to Salem, Massachusetts! With its rich history, witchy vibes, and full-on festive energy, visiting Salem in October is something every Halloween-lover should experience at least once. If you’re planning a visit (or just dreaming about one), here’s how my trip went — and a few tips I picked up along the way.
✈️ Getting There & Where I Stayed
I flew into Boston Logan Airport and took an Uber straight to my hotel — the Residence Inn by Marriott Boston Logan in Chelsea. It ended up being the perfect place to stay for this kind of trip. Salem is incredibly popular during October (and for good reason), so finding a hotel in town can be both expensive and booked out well in advance.
Chelsea offered a quiet, convenient alternative. The Chelsea train stop is just a 3 minute walk from the hotel, and from there, it’s a direct ride into Salem — no need to deal with parking, rental cars, or busy Ubers on crowded streets.
👜 Travel Tip: Be sure to bring a lightweight backpack or day bag with you — you'll want a place to stash souvenirs, snacks, layers, and anything else you collect throughout the day. Once you’re in Salem, especially during the Halloween season, you won’t want to leave until the festivities wind down at night, so come prepared to stay and explore all day long!
All the Spooky Salem Vibes
Salem goes all-out in October. As soon as we stepped off the train, the Haunted Happenings atmosphere hit — think: costumed visitors, street performers, local vendors, and just the right amount of spooky.
Here are a few of the highlights from our trip:
Haunted Happenings Marketplace
This lively outdoor market was full of unique vendors selling everything from handmade witchy goods to fall treats and art. It’s the perfect place to pick up a one-of-a-kind souvenir or gift. To be warned, it gets BUSY.
Count Orlok’s Nightmare Gallery
A must-see for horror movie fans! This spooky museum is full of life-sized horror icons from classic and modern films. Think Dracula, Freddy Krueger, and more — super immersive and really well done. After this, we stopped at a little gift shop next door and grabbed all of the little things. you can think of, like a t-shirt with Wednesday Addams, magnets, pens, etc.
Jaho Coffee
We stopped here for a little caffeine break and loved the cozy vibe. Their seasonal drinks and pastries hit the spot after walking around all day. This is quite a bit of a walk outside of the main "haunted happenings marketplace" area. But there are many shops & resturants to stop at on the way.
The House of the Seven Gables
This historic home is one of Salem’s most iconic landmarks. If you’re into literature, architecture, or just love classic New England charm, it’s absolutely worth a visit.
Wand-Making & Witchy Shops
There are countless fun little shops in Salem, but one of our favorite stops was a wand-making shop where we got to browse beautifully crafted, magical pieces. It felt like a real-life Diagon Alley moment.
Nighttime Walking Tours
Salem really comes alive after dark. If you only do one tour in Salem, make it this!! We joined a spooky evening walking tour that shared ghost stories, historical facts, and some eerie legends. Even if you’re not usually into that kind of thing, the guides are fun and theatrical — perfect for setting the Halloween mood.
The Salem Trolley
This hop-on-hop-off style trolley is a great way to see a lot of the town without walking miles. It gives you a little history and easy access to all the main attractions. You need to be there EARLY or you will not get a spot. It's extremely popular and the best way to see so many things around Salem.
The Point
This neighborhood has great energy during Halloween and is worth exploring if you have extra time — lots of local flavor and some great food options.

Hocus Pocus Filming Locations
If you're a Hocus Pocus fan (and who isn’t?), Salem is a real treat — you can visit several of the actual filming locations from the movie! We loved seeing the iconic Salem Common where lots of scenes were shot. Other fun stops include the exterior of Allison’s mansion (actually the Ropes Mansion, which you can stroll by) and Old Town Hall, where the famous “I Put a Spell on You” scene takes place. It's like stepping right into the movie — pure Halloween magic!
Final Thoughts
If you're planning a trip to Salem in October, my biggest tip is: plan early and stay smart. Hotels in Salem fill up quickly and can be expensive, so staying nearby in a place like Chelsea (with easy train access) makes everything easier.
There’s nothing quite like Salem during Halloween — the energy, the history, the costumes, the crisp fall air — it's all magic. I’d do it again in a heartbeat… maybe next time with the kids when they’re old enough to enjoy the fun!
